What is the Gynaecological Cancer Research Education and Development Society?

The Gynaecological Cancer Research Education and Development Society (or the GC RED Society for short) is a registered charity organization founded to support research, education and development of services for women with gynaecological cancer.  The forerunner of this society was a charity fund called the Research, Education and Development Fund (or RED Fund), which was established in 2007.  From 2007 – 2016 finance from the RED Fund was used for the following purposes:

  1. Development and maintenance of the Queensland Trophoblast Centre Database.  This is a world leading database and management system that allows registration and tracking of patients with trophoblastic disease (neoplasm of the placenta).  This allows optimal management of patients often quite distant from major centres, and is an instrument for comprehensive quality assurance and for research.  This database has put the Queensland Centre for Gynaecological Cancer at the forefront in management of this condition and will allow the opportunity to standardize care across all units in Australia.
  2. The RED Fund was used to finance multiple, so-called ‘Twilight Information Seminars’ for nursing and paramedical staff involved with gynaecological cancer
  3. Several clinicians, nurses, subspecialty training fellows and registrars have been sent to overseas centres to attend  The RED Fund has sponsored regular Quality Assurance and Morbidity and Mortality Meetings.
  4. Several research projects were supported by the RED Fund.

The Society remains committed to the multiple tenets of research, education and development of services for women with gynaecological cancer.  Requests for funding that fulfill the objectives of the society may be made in writing and submitted to the Board.  The GCS RED Society operates under the legislative requirements of the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).  Regular Board meetings will be convened to facilitate management of the society and its resources and to consider requests for funding.  Specific ongoing support has been and is being provided as follows:

  1. A grant of $50 000 was made to the ECHO study.  This is a randomised clinical trial in patients with ovarian and related cancers, comparing standard surgery + chemotherapy with surgery + chemotherapy + a tailored exercise regimen.  There are studies in patients with breast cancer that show the addition of exercise to standard therapy increases tolerance of chemotherapy, quality of life and even some survival advantage.  This is an exciting research question that should provide insight into a simple regimen to improve quality of life and survival in patients with ovarian cancer.
  2. The GC RED Society continues to support regular Quality Assurance and Morbidity and Mortality Meetings.
  3. There will be continued support of clinicians, trainees, paramedical and nursing staff to attend and present papers to international conferences.

The Inaugural Society Board

The inaugural Society board will consist of six members, four of whom are gynaecological oncologists, one member from the business community and a consumer representative.  Replacement of board members will be according to ACNC governance requirements.  All members of the Board provide their time and expertise for free..
